Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 2 law enforcement unit has officially begun its Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on the conservation of Ludong, a culturally significant and endangered species, under the Bureau Administrative Circular (BAC) 247. The IEC initiative is part of the broader implementation of the Ludong Closed Season, which runs from October 1 to November 15, 2024.

Ludong, also known as the President’s Fish, is a cultural symbol of Region 2 and an integral part of its rich biodiversity. The closed season, which prohibits the catching, selling, and transporting of Ludong, aims to protect the species during its critical spawning period.

The campaign commenced during the Deputy Fish Warden Training held in Tumauini, Isabela, and in another session in Cabarroguis, Quirino province. These trainings aimed to equip local fish wardens with essential knowledge about the closed season, helping them enforce the regulations and spread awareness among fisherfolk in their respective municipalities.

Additionally, from September 24 to 27, the BFAR law enforcement team conducted a waterborne patrol along the Cagayan River, particularly in Aparri, Camalaniugan, Lal-lo, and Gattaran. During the patrols, the team distributed pamphlets and held brief discussions with local fisherfolk, emphasizing the importance of protecting Ludong and complying with the closed season.

The IEC efforts are expected to expand in the coming weeks as BFAR continues to work closely with local government units and communities to ensure compliance and promote the conservation of this endangered species. (C. De Peralta)
