SAGADA, Mountain Province – The Fisheries Management Northern Pacific Seaboard equips all members of the management body to become effective resource stewards through preparation of Policy Briefs of major fish stocks in major fishing grounds covered by the FMA1 waters on November 13-15, 2024 at Rock Inn, Sagada, Mountain Province.
Backed by scientific studies, the participants were taught on the fundamentals of Policy Brief Writing and its importance in ensuring the sustainable management of fisheries resources. This initiative also geared to ensure the livelihood of fishing communities are secured and make fish available in every table of Filipino family.
Recognizing the importance of Policy Briefs in information dissemination and encouraging support from policy-makers and stakeholders, the participants were grouped into three to work on the identified major commercially-important species along San Miguel Bay, one of the 19 major fishing grounds of the management area.
With their extensive experiences and training in the preparation of policy briefs, Atty. Rosendo Meneses IV and Atty. Mutya Alegre, both legal officers from DA-BFAR Central Office served as resource speakers wherein they introduced key topic areas essential in the write shop.
Meantime, Dr. Emma L. Ballad, alternate FMA1 Focal Person, said that the policy briefs once in place these will contribute greatly to the proper management of species listed in the priority list of the FMA1 with the assistance of its scientific advisory group. She stressed that identification of these species already gone through tight scientific evaluation by a pool of experts.
