The DA-BFAR 2 – Regional Fisheries Inspection and Quarantine Unit led the inspection of a live Rice eel (Monopterus albus), or “kiwet” holding facility for export for their adherence to international trade requirements in Cordon, Isabela.

Said move was made after the business entity requested for an inspection as a requirement for the renewal of their registration to operate.

The activity was led by Dr. Emma L. Ballad, Officer-in-Charge of the Regional Fisheries Inspection and Quarantine Unit (RFIQU). The team inspected the relevant documents, operational procedures and the key facility areas from unloading area to the packing area to determine its compliance with industry guidelines and export standards.

The inspection is part of the regular activities of the RFIQU in verifying that export facilities meet regulatory requirements and adhere to established industry standards. The evaluation process is crucial in ensuring the establishment’s adherence to relevant laws, and Fisheries Administrative Orders (FAOs) including those that govern the safe export of live aquatic species. This showcases the commitment DA-BFAR Region 2 in upholding stringent biosecurity measures and regulatory standards to promote sustainable and responsible fisheries practices in the region.

After the inspection, the team confirmed that the facility remains fully compliant with BFAR regulations and export guidelines. As a result, the company is set to receive another two-year permit, ensuring its continued operation as an exporter.
