March 5, 2025 – The DA-BFAR 2 is urging Cagayan’s fish farmers in advancing food security by embracing integrated fish farming techniques aimed at optimizing land use and recycling water resources. This call was made my Ms. Jennifer Tattao, Provincial Fishery Officer during the Training on Package of Technology in Aquaculture from March 5-7, 2025.
The three-day training which was attended by project cooperators and extension workers from local government units, is a prerequisite for the awarding of technology demonstration projects to qualified cooperators.
Series of lectures covering essential aquaculture topics were lined up for the training. These included fishpond construction and maintenance, fish health management, and responsible aquaculture practices. Such training is crucial, as studies have identified a significant need among fish farmers for education in integrated fish farming, particularly in areas like disease-free seed selection and disease control methods.
Integrated fish farming combines aquaculture with other agricultural activities, promoting efficient resource utilization and sustainability. This approach not only enhances productivity but also contributes to environmental conservation by recycling water resources. The training aligns with global efforts to improve aquaculture practices, as seen in initiatives like the Tilapia Industry Roadmap, which emphasizes hands-on training and on-farm extension services to disseminate verified aquaculture technologies.
Further, Tattao stressed that by adopting integrated farming practices, fish farmers will achieve sustainable aquaculture, improved food security, and enhanced economic well-being.
