In a joint effort to strengthen the fisheries sector in Batanes, the Department of Labor and Employment and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources awarded livelihood projects to 13 fisherfolk associations across the province. This initiative is part DOLE’s Integrated Livelihood Program, implemented by BFAR under the project titled Sustaining Batanes Waters Through Fisheries Livelihood Project.
The two agencies provided one motorized boat equipped with a 19-horsepower engine and complete fishing gear, including troll lines, drift gill nets, and multiple handlines to 10 fisherfolk associations. The fishing boats awarded came with other fishing accessories such as underwater flashlights, GPS devices, coolers, and chilling tanks to enhance fishing efficiency and safety.
Moreover, six fisherfolk groups were provided with post-harvest equipment and tools to support fish processing activities, helping improve product quality and marketability. Additionally, one group received support for tilapia culture, promoting aquaculture diversification and sustainable inland fisheries.
The activity was graced by key provincial leaders and stakeholders, including Hon. Ciriaco B. Gato, Jr., Lone District Representative of Batanes; Hon. Ronald P. Aguto, Jr., Governor of Batanes; Cesar Doroteo V. Hostallero, Provincial Agriculturist; Ramoncito Liggayu, Provincial Director of DOLE; and Justinne Jerico Socito, Provincial Administrator and PESO Manager, along with Local Chief Executives and representatives from the municipalities of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan.
This joint initiative underscores the shared commitment of DOLE and BFAR to empower fisherfolk and preserve the rich marine resources of Batanes. By providing sustainable livelihood opportunities, both agencies aim to build stronger, more resilient coastal communities and ensure a thriving future for the province’s fisheries sector.
